Aerial Photography
A Toby Harriman Photography Collection
Captured from the air, this series by Toby Harriman offers a rare look at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar (MCAS Miramar), also known as Mitscher Field, located in San Diego, California. Once home to the U.S. Navy’s “Top Gun” program, Miramar remains an active hub for Marine aviation and tactical training.
Photographed via helicopter in coordination with local air traffic control, these images reveal the base’s precise layout, expansive runways, and the organized geometry that defines military aviation. From fighter jet shelters and maintenance zones to the surrounding desert grid, the series captures both the power and discipline of modern flight operations.
The work continues Harriman’s exploration of aviation architecture and airspace systems, highlighting the intersection between infrastructure, coordination, and motion that keeps complex environments running safely and efficiently.
