William P. Hobby Airport

Aerial Photography Collections by Toby Harriman

As part of my Aerial Airports Photography Collection, this series showcases William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) in Houston, Texas. Captured from the air, these photographs offer a unique look at the airport’s layout, ramp activity, and architectural design. Hobby serves as a key hub for Southwest Airlines, which operates the vast majority of its flights, making it a vital gateway for domestic and regional travel across the U.S. From above, the airport’s compact yet efficient footprint reveals the harmony between movement, infrastructure, and operations.

This series also documents Hobby’s $470 million multi-phase expansion, which includes the construction of a new covered departures canopy, the addition of seven new gates to the West Concourse, and upgrades to baggage systems and passenger facilities. The transformation is being led by firms such as Hensel Phelps Construction Co., Clark Construction, and a Hensel Phelps–CBIC joint venture, with design work by Corgan. Specialized contributors include Fisk Electric, Ford Audio-Video Systems, and others. These aerial images capture both the daily operations and long-term evolution of an airport that continues to grow in step with Southwest’s expanding footprint in Houston.
